The Batman and Its Expanded Universe Landing on HBO Max Soon

It wasn’t just acting that Colin Farrell played the role of a hard-talking Penguin, in The Batman. He was actually quite miffed that he couldn’t arm the character with his usual cigar and umbrella.

Farrell will have to quit smoking for at least a few of the new projects. Director of The Batman with Robert Pattinson, Matt Reeves confirmed that the movie will be expanding into its own universe in February. The film already has Arkham Asylum and Penguin spinoffs in the pipeline. The series will follow Oswald Cobblepots as he rises to power. Farrell stars in Farrell’s portrayal of the low-level criminal who is still a dangerous crook.

Reeves stated in spoiler chat that he saw a kind of “American dream in Gotham” story. It was almost Scarface-like.

Reeves stated that “That story has evolved.” We’ve moved more in to the realm of what might happen in Arkham, as it pertains to our movie. Arkham is like a scary movie.

Although there is no word on whether the rot will lead to more thumbs downs than thumbs ups yet, it’s likely that the answer is yes, given its existence in Reeves’ Bat spirit. The director also takes over as the executive producer of the animated Batman: Caped Crusader. This is a bridge between the 1990s The Batman: The Animated Series.

With Batman slated for streaming on HBO Max April 19th, and Batman 2 set for 2023-2024, Reeves has plenty of dark new worlds for him to explore. Given that he mentioned multiple characters being shown and The Batman 2 likely featuring Paul Dano’s The Riddler as the sequel, there are still many options. These include Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, an aerial view of Alfred’s butler (with a Andy Serkis game), or any other twisty alleys within Gotham’s noir setting.
