It’s now that the Oscars have arrived, let us take a look at the likely winners on March 27, 2017. With their impressive nominations, The Power of the Dog & Dune have plenty of momentum going into the evening. However, smaller films such as CODA and CODA also make an impact throughout the awards season.
Due to the fact that some categories were shunted out of proper broadcast, the ceremony is currently being hosted by Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall. There will be lots of interest to see who wins across the board even though most have not seen any of the short live-action films (you should).
The Best Picture
Belfast CODA
Do not look up
Drive My Car
Dune
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
Nightmare Alley
Dog Power
West Side Story
CODA has seen a surge in the last few days. However, Power of the Dog’s 12 nominations for the role of Power of the Dog should help to overcome the groundswell of support that exists for the smaller indie.
The Best Director
Kenneth Branagh, Belfast
Ryusuke Hamaguchi – Drive My Car
Paul Thomas Anderson, Licorice Pizza
Jane Campion: The Power of the Dog
Steven Spielberg, West Side Story
Jane Campion, the second woman to win Best Director in the history, will most likely be the winner, regardless how Best Picture turns out.
The Best Actor
Javier Bardem, Being Ricardos
Benedict Cumberbatch: The Power of the Dog
Andrew Garfield, Tick, Tick … Boom!
Will Smith, King Richard
Denzel Washington, The Tragedy of Macbeth
Will Smith is the clear frontrunner for this award all season, so it seems like he will win the Oscar.
Best Actress
Jessica Chastain, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”
Olivia Colman: The Lost Daughter
Penelope Cruz and Parallel Mothers
Nicole Kidman, Being The Ricardos
Kristen Stewart, Spencer
This is a very busy category. However, we think Oscar voters will be most interested in Colman’s speech. It may give Colman the advantage and her second Oscar.
The Best Supporting Actor
Ciaran Hinds, Belfast
Troy Kotsur, CODA
Jesse Plemons, The Power of the Dog
J.K. Simmons: Being the Ricardos
Kodi McPhee, The Power of the Dog
Kotsur has taken almost every pre-cursor with grace. It would be surprising if he didn’t get the Oscar Night big prize.
Best Supporting Actress
Jessie Buckley: The Lost Daughter
Ariana DeBose, West Side Story
Judi Dench, Belfast
Kirsten Dunst: The Power of the Dog
Aunjanue Elis, King Richard
DeBose was a frontrunner throughout the season. She is well-deserved, given her strong performance in Spielberg’s update.
The Best Original Screenplay
Belfast
Do not look up
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
The World’s Worst Person
Some people are worried that Don’t Look Up might win the biggest prize. However, we think the Oscars will just award Adam McKay his second screenplay Oscar and the film’s most prestigious trophy.
Best Adapted Screenplay
CODA
Drive My Car
Dune
The Lost Daughter
Dog Power
The Power of the Dog wins, but the Academy loves The Lost Daughter and can’t deny its remarkable feat of adaptation.
Favorite Animated Feature
Encanto
Flee
Luca
The Machines vs. Mitchells
Raya and The Last Dragon
It’s difficult to see Encanto win here given its global status.
The Best Production Design
Dune
Nightmare Alley
Dog Power
Macbeth’s Tragedy
West Side Story
Power of the Dog will likely win this race due to its current status as the frontrunner. However, Dune may be able to sneak in due its vast technical accomplishments.
The Best Dress Design
Cruella
Cyrano
Dune
Nightmare Alley
West Side Story
Cruella’s flashiest costume is the most striking, making it a solid choice despite the strong Sci-Fi costuming of Dune and West Side Story’s glorious colors.
The Best Cinematography
Dune
Nightmare Alley
Dog Power
Macbeth’s Tragedy
West Side Story
This is a great list of nominees. However, we believe Power of the Dog will win this award due to its strong performance at the Oscars. This movie is also one of the best-looking films in this year.
The Best Editing
Do not look up
Dune
King Richard
Dog Power
Boom!
Boom! We’re betting that the upset will make live forecasters a bit alarmed. They may be the only opportunity to honor a film they liked quite a lot.
The Best Hairstyling and Makeup Products
Come 2 America
Cruella
Dune
Tammy Faye’s Eyes
House of Gucci
You could do this one in many different ways. But Tammy Faye is able to give it an edge with a comparison of real life and some outrageous looks.
The Best Sound
Belfast
Dune
There is no time to die
Dog Power
West Side Story
Dune is a favorite among many technical categories. But perhaps Dune’s most notable category is sound. Its design, which is impressive yet incredibly obvious, makes Dune a strong contender.
The Best Visual Effects
Dune
No cost to the Guy
There is no time to die
Shang-Chi, the Legend of the Ten Rings and Shang-Chi
Spider-Man has no way home
Dune would be the winner in a perfect world. However, we are betting that the Academy will take the Academy’s only chance at awarding 2021’s biggest film.
The Best Score
Do not look up
Dune
Encanto
Parallel mothers
Dog Power
Hans Zimmer is likely to be awarded this award for his remarkable score for Dune. This element is crucial to the film’s momentum and the sense of fear that pervades each moment.
The Best Song
“Be Alive” (King Richard)
“Dos Oruguitas” (Encanto)
“Down to Joy (Belfast).
“No Time to Die” (“No Time to Die”)
“Somehow You Do” (4 Good Days).
Billie Eilish, a superstar, is the Bond song’s first release almost two years back. It feels easy to pick from a very star-studded genre.
The Best Documentary Feature
Ascension
Attica
Flee
The Summer of Soul (…Or When the Revolution Couldn’t Be Televised
Write with Fire
Each documentary is excellent, but Summer of Soul might be the best because of its high level of critical acclaim.
International Feature of the Year
Lunana, A Yak in Bhutan’s Classroom
Flee, Denmark
Italy: The Hand of God
Drive My Car Japan
Norway, The Worst Country Person on the Planet
Drive My Car has been nominated for Best Picture. It would not surprise me if this was the case.
The Best Animated Short
The Art of Affairs
Bestia
Boxballet
Robin Robin
Windshield Wiper
What about a Netflix animated film that features cute birds? Robin Robin looks like a great bet but they are notoriously hard to find.
The Best Short Documentary
Audiobook
Lead Me Home
Basketball’s Queen
Three songs for Benazir
Bullies: When We Were Bullies
Netflix tends to be a great choice for shorts. It has three nominees from this list. Audible is a mix of tragedy and heart that could make it the best Netflix streaming service.
The Best Live-Action Short
The Dress
A Long Goodbye
In My Head
Please hold
Ala Kachuu – Take and Run
Riz Ahmed is without doubt the most prominent name in the lineup. That should make him the favorite to win.
