Cancun, Mexico is a popular destination for tourists due to the beautiful beaches and rich history. There is never a bad moment to visit Cancun. While there is no “worst” time to visit Cancun at this moment, here are some tips to help you plan your trip.

It might be difficult to determine the best time to travel to Cancun due to the changing weather conditions and fluctuating hotel and airline prices. Let’s get clear and determine when the best time to travel to Mexico’s most beautiful coastal destination.

Cancun’s weather like year-round?

Cancun has a tropical climate similar to Puerto Vallarta, which means it receives plenty of warmth all year. However, Cancun is vulnerable in hurricane season due to its geography. Although large hurricanes are not often able to make landfall directly on Cancun’s coast, Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 was a Category Five hurricane. Hurricane Dean in 2007 was another Category Five storm. Hurricane Wilma, a Category Four hurricane, made dangerously close to Cancun in 2005 when it reached the Yucatan Peninsula.

It is important to remember that Cancun receives its greatest rainfall in September and October, even if there are no major hurricanes. However, the driest month of the year is February, March and April. Although Cancun still experiences heavy rains during winter holidays, the majority of hurricanes have passed by. Cancun’s beaches are more likely to have the highest levels of seaweed in summer than beaches that experience cooler, but clearer, water in winter.

A late summer/early fall trip might work for you if you are comfortable spending time in your hotel or don’t mind being outside in the rain. If you are looking for sunshine and lots of fun at the beach you might be more comfortable with Cancun’s late winter/early spring trips.

Cancun has a high season of travel from December through March. The large crowds arrive in Cancun for their winter vacations, while spring breaks are crowded. The opposite is true. Cancun has its lowest season, with the smallest crowds, from June through October. This period includes the Atlantic and Caribbean hurricane seasons (see below). Cancun’s shoulder season is April, May and November. During these months, the tourist crowds can still be noticeable, but they are not as heavy and hot.

High season usually means higher prices. Cancun hotels and flights tend to be more expensive in winter, spring break, or the weeks between. However, hotel rooms and flights are typically at their lowest during the summer, and most of the autumn, when Cancun experiences its highest rainfall and high heat.

Cancun’s Best Time To Visit

You’ll want to go on a holiday between Thanksgiving and Halloween, or in May or April if you are looking for the “Goldilocks Time”, which is characterized by great weather and smaller crowds with lower prices. Winter is the best time to enjoy outdoor activities. However, you will need to be willing and able pay more. You can save money by booking a summer vacation. However, you should bring your raincoats and umbrellas. Also, be prepared to alter your plans if the weather turns bad. Enjoy your vacation, wherever you choose to travel, and make sure to check out any fun places that are off the beaten track.
