Food brands should be implementing sustainable practices

Adopt Carbon Labels

The first carbon labeling was introduced last year, in 2021. It shows consumers how much carbon has been emitted over the lifecycle of a product. This includes transportation and disposal. As consumer demand grows, we will see more brands use these labels.

Ensure Regenerative Agriculture Wherever Possible

It isn’t a new idea to use regenerative agriculture. It has been used by indigenous people for many centuries and it is still being practiced today. This holistic farming approach connects to and enhances all of the surrounding ecosystems.

This method focuses on the regeneration of topsoil. It reduces topsoil loss during farming. This reduces the amount of carbon that is lost to the atmosphere. The soil becomes more diverse and can produce more nutritious foods. GMOs, pesticides and big farming are more common in scorched earth. This is generally less environmentally-friendly.

Food brands that have regenerative supply networks don’t need convincing consumers to try new foods. They just need to make consumers switch to the newer versions of products they love, with improved environmental footprints.

Farmers Pay Carbon

Carbon sequestration refers to a method by which producers and food growers capture carbon and keep it in their soil, thus preventing any escaping into our atmosphere. It can happen in many ways: biologically or geographically. Lightfoot believes that these practices require more investment.
